Helping families affected by Zoloft birth defects after taking this SSRI antidepressant drug during pregnancy and representing individuals who have developed side effects in filing a Zoloft lawsuit. Currently cases are being filed individually and no nationwide Zoloft class action lawsuit has been filed.
Recently, women and families of a child affected by a birth defect have become more aware that the SSRI medication Zoloft which has been widely prescribed to help treat depression has been linked with serious birth defects side effects. Many women of childbearing age have taken antidepressant medications such as Zoloft which are also referred to as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
These antidepressant drugs carry with them a number of different serious side effects for the unborn infant associated with them including the increase risk of premature birth, breathing problems, gastrointestinal side effects and motor problems. The exact nature and amount of risk for a child developing Zoloft birth defects is currently unknown, however the risk of developing complications has been reported in numerous cases in babies following use of these medications during pregnancy. Women taking this drug during their pregnancy can expose their baby to the medication while in the womb leading to the development of a Zoloft birth defect.
Zoloft Birth Defects Side Effects Include:
• PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension)
• Abdominal Birth Defects
• Heart Birth Defects
• Cranial Birth Defects
In 2004 the Food and Drug Administration released an announcement for women who were pregnant or could become pregnant regarding taking certain antidepressant drugs in the late third trimester of pregnancy. The warning stated that doctors may want to gradually taper pregnant women off antidepressant medications in the third trimester so that the baby is not adversely affected.
In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert regarding the increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) which is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that occurs soon after birth. The alert covered Zoloft along with other SSRI antidepressant drugs. The label for SSRI medications was also revised to include additional information regarding a study suggesting that exposure to the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy may be linked with an increased risk of Zoloft birth defects involving cardiac problems.
