Recently, more information has become available regarding the drug Lexapro which is prescribed to help in the treatment of depression and has been associated with serious Lexapro birth defects problems. Many women who are in the age range of having children have taken antidepressant medications such as Lexapro which are also referred to as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
These antidepressant drugs have a variety of serious side effects for the unborn child associated with them including the increased risk of gastrointestinal side effects, premature birth, motor problems and breathing problems. The development of several serious birth defects has been reported in babies following use of these medications, however the exact amount of risk of Lexapro birth defects is currently unknown. Women taking this antidepressant drug during their pregnancy can expose their baby to the medication while in the womb leading to the development of a Lexapro birth defect.

Lexapro Birth Defects May Include:

• PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension)
• Abdominal Birth Defects
• Heart Birth Defects
• Cranial Birth Defects

The Food and Drug Administration in 2004 announced a warning against the use of certain antidepressants for women in the late third trimester of pregnancy. The warning stated that doctors may want to gradually taper pregnant women off antidepressant medications in the third trimester so that the baby is not adversely affected. After a woman delivers, she should consult with her doctor to decide whether to return to a full dose of the antidepressant medication during the period when she is most vulnerable to problems such as postpartum depression.

In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration published a safety alert regarding the increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) which is a serious and life-threatening lung condition that can occur soon following birth. The alert covered drugs similar to Lexapro along with other antidepressant drugs including Paxil and Prozac. The labels of some SSRI drugs were also revised to include additional information regarding a study suggesting that exposure to the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy may be linked with increased risk birth defects involving cardiac problems. Lexapro defects continue to be examined and analyzed.

We believe that the manufacturer of Lexapro should be held legally accountable for any harm they are responsible for and people should be fairly compensated for their damages due to Lexapro and pregnancy side effects. Many families and their child have had their life changed in a number of ways due to Lexapro and birth defects including:
• Unpaid medical bills
• Emotional suffering
• Permanent injuries
• Greater risk of developing future problems
• Future surgeries and therapy
• Loss of quality of life
